Galveston – Fall 2010

Our family loves the beach and the closest one to us is none other than Galveston. In the past, we’ve spent a pretty penny on a beach house, but those days are long gone around here. Instead, we spent a fraction of that cost and loaded up the family truckster and camper went to Galveston Island State Park.

As the days for our trip grew closer, rain appeared to be our greatest challenge.  We couldn’t have been more wrong. Arriving at the campground, the rain fell and darkness made getting settled a little more challenging than our patience allowed. After that, we didn’t see a drop of the rain the entire trip.

We set up camp and enjoyed longs walk on the beach each morning and evening. The kids dug holes half way to China. The dogs learned they don’t have to bark at everyone. Overall, a grand time was had by all parties, until a cold wind began to blow…

See with cooler temps came a north wind. It was at this time that we learned a little something: a south wind off the ocean makes life for mosquitoes difficult, but a north wind makes it paradise. Yes, the last 24 hours were a futile effort at keeping those pesky creatures at bay. We couldn’t put on enough bug spray to deter their efforts and as a result are scratching even as we type as a result. Some of those little fellas were bigger than hummingbirds…

On our last morning, we ran – yes, ran – to the beach and looked like something out of a Chevy Chase movie as we swatted and danced trying to evade the blood thirsty creatures. After just 3-4 minutes of this insanity, we quickly ran back to the camper to hide from our little friends.

We also drove into Kemah to visit the Boardwalk. The kids had a blast! We fed catfish, watched the boats leaving the marina, and soared much higher in the sky than some of us are comfortable with.

On our trip home, we made a stop at Buccees and picked up some beaver nuggets. Good times…

Say Hello to Samantha the Snake

Anthony has wanted a snake for quite some time now. So, since Rachel and I are a bunch of softies, we finally caved and got him one. The story goes a little something like this:

One afternoon a couple of weeks back, Anthony caught a small snake in the backyard and we thought this would make a great free pet. So, he set up a 10 gallon aquarium for his new friend. Carefully he chose the perfect rock and branches from the backyard. Then, we went to put our newest family member in the aquarium and out it fell… Upside down!

Yep… During the construction of its habitat, the little fella expired.

Anthony was crushed… So, Samantha entered the picture. You have to admit she is pretty, right?

We’ve already had the conversation clarifing the following:

  • Mom did not want a snake
  • If the above mentioned snake escapes, we must stay in a hotel until above mentioned snake is located (dead or alive)
  • Dad did not want a snake
  • Samantha is Anthony’s snake
  • We – the parents – will provide information from books and the internet about snakes, but he is on his own to care (aka… touch/handle/love) the snake.

So far Anthony seems ok with this arrangement. In the event the situation changes and you like Samantha’s appearance, you can check Craigslist for a corn snake for sale soon.

Nicole Turns 7

What a year!

Nicole has lost many a tooth, pierced her ears, become a true ballerina, and become the math wiz of the family. Nicole’s sixth year has been exciting… but, it is also complete. A new year is upon us (and they seem to be coming quickly by the way).

We had a family birthday this year for Nicole and she scored some pretty cool stuff!

Dry Ice

After stumbling upon some dry ice the other day (more on how later), the kids learned a little about gasses and magic potions. The pictures honestly don’t fully show the awe and wonder in their eyes at this stuff. (Please excuse the dirty dishes…)
